We’ve overwintered tens of thousands of colonies. These are the checks that actually make the difference.

Winter is coming. You might not feel it standing in a July apiary with the sun on your back and the bees flying thick and fast, but they do. The moment the days start getting shorter after the summer solstice, your bees are already responding. They’re thinking about winter even when you’re not.
That’s the thing most new beekeepers miss. Winter preparation isn’t a September job. By September, you’re reacting. The colonies that come through winter well are the ones that have been quietly set up since midsummer.
Why July is the right time to start
We film a lot of our winter prep content in early July, and we always get comments asking why we’re talking about winter on a beautiful hot day. The answer is simple: the bees are already responding to the shorter days.
In some apiaries, you’ll see drones being kicked out as early as the first week of July. That’s your signal. The colony is winding down its reproduction cycle and shifting focus. If you wait until August or September to start thinking about winter readiness, you’re already playing catch-up.
Our rule here is simple. From the longest day of the year (around 21 June), start paying attention. You don’t panic. You don’t rush. But you start looking at your colonies with winter in mind.
The six things to check
When we assess a nucleus colony for winter readiness in early July, we’re looking at six things. Get all six right and you’re in good shape. Miss one, and it can unravel quickly.
1. Brood
You want to see an active brood nest with brood in all stages. If you are seeing multiple frames of capped brood and eggs then the colony is starting in a good place.
In early July, a colony still has roughly eight to ten weeks of building to do before it’s genuinely ready for winter. Those brood frames will cycle through several more rounds before you’re done. That’s fine. That’s exactly what you want to see at this stage.
2. Pollen
Pollen is the only source of protein bees get. You need to see some in the frames, but not too much. A good mix of colours is a positive sign that foragers are bringing in variety from across the local area.
If you’ve got three or four frames rammed full of pollen, that’s actually a problem. It crowds the brood nest and leaves less room for the queen to lay. We’d take a couple of frames out in that situation. They’re useful for queen rearing later, and you don’t want pollen blocking the colony’s development. 1 – 2 frames of pollen is normal for this time of year.
3. Stores
You want to see at least one to two frames of accessible stores at all times, not capped winter stores (that comes later), but usable food the bees can reach right now.
The risk that beekeepers tend to underestimate is mid-season starvation. It can happen in summer if a colony is growing fast and there’s a gap in the forage. If you knock a colony back through starvation in July, it’s very hard to recover them in time for winter. Always err on the side of having enough.
That said, you don’t want four or five frames of capped stores and almost no room for the queen to lay. It’s a balance. At this point in the season, lean toward adequate stores rather than maximum stores.
4. Space
In early July, your colony still needs room to expand. Swarming risk drops significantly at this time of year, so you can afford to give them space without worrying too much about triggering a swarm.
We don’t want to see a nuc box that’s already bursting at the seams in early July with nowhere left to grow. The colony needs capacity. This is one reason we supply six-frame nucs rather than the five-frame boxes that many suppliers send. That extra frame of space makes a real difference to how a colony builds up through late summer.
5. A good quality mated queen
This is the most important item on the list. Everything else can be adjusted. Stores can be topped up. Frames can be rearranged. But if you don’t have a well-mated queen laying consistently and confidently in July, you have a serious problem that won’t fix itself.
You want to see a queen moving purposefully across the frames, laying in a clean, consistent pattern. If she’s patchy, slowing down, or producing large amounts of drone brood, think seriously about requeening before it’s too late in the season.
A poor queen in July leads to reduced winter bee numbers in September. And that leads directly to spring failure.
6. New frames
This one surprises some beekeepers. All our nucs go into winter on frames that are less than 12 months old. We don’t recycle old dark frames from production colonies, and we’d encourage you to do the same.
Old frames carry higher pathogen loads, including Varroa mites and disease spores. New frames keep that load low. Colonies overwintered on frames started with clean foundation consistently come through better. It’s not a complicated principle.
Varroa treatment: the step most beekeepers get wrong
This is where we see the most consistent mistakes. Most beekeepers know they should treat for Varroa. The timing is where things go wrong.
The standard approach is to wait until the honey comes off in August, then put treatments in. For full-sized production colonies, that’s reasonable. For nucleus colonies, it’s completely unnecessary to wait that long, and waiting costs you.
Treat early. We put Apivar strips into our nucs in mid to late July. In some cases, if conditions allow and the colony goes through a broodless period, we’ll do an oxalic acid sublimation first to knock the mite numbers right down, then follow up with Apivar strips to cover the brood cycle.
Why does this matter so much? Because your winter bees are being raised in August and September. Those are the bees that will carry the colony through until spring. If they emerge from heavily mite-infested brood, they come out physiologically damaged. They have shorter lifespans. They’re less able to cluster effectively. And the colony quietly fails in February or March, right when you thought you were nearly through the worst of it.
Getting mite numbers low before those winter bees are raised is one of the single most effective things you can do for your colony’s survival rate.

Queens bred to fight Varroa naturally

What your colony should look like by late August
By the end of August, a nucleus colony that’s been managed well through the summer should look like this:
- Six frames, mostly covered in bees
- Three to four frames of sealed brood in a good, consistent pattern
- Two frames of stores, well capped
- A ring of pollen around the brood nest on at least one frame
- A strong, confident laying queen
- Varroa treatment in place and working
If your colony is at this point by late August, you’re in good shape. From here, your job is to top up stores as needed through September and October, check that the colony remains healthy, and leave the bees to do what they’re good at.
If your colony is nowhere near this point by late August, you have a decision to make. Can you still bring it up to strength in time? Or is it better to combine it with a stronger colony and accept the loss? Combining a weak colony with a stronger one rather than nursing it through winter is often the kinder choice for the bees, and the more productive choice for you come spring.
The mistakes that lead to spring failures
We hear from beekeepers every spring who’ve lost colonies over winter. The same patterns come up again and again.
Splitting too late. Making new nucs in August or September doesn’t leave enough time to raise healthy winter bees. The colony goes into winter short on numbers and slowly dwindles before spring arrives.
Ignoring a failing queen. A queen that’s slowing down in July should be replaced. By October, the window has closed. The colony goes into winter with an ageing or failing queen and comes out of it queenless in March, when there’s nothing you can do quickly enough to save it.
Treating for Varroa too late. The timing of treatment matters as much as whether you treat at all. Waiting until August means your winter bees are raised under heavy mite pressure, and they pay the price.
Underfeeding in autumn. If stores aren’t at the right level before the end of October, there’s a real risk of starvation through late winter. Bees don’t break cluster to forage in January. They need accessible stores within reach of the cluster at all times.
Overwintering on old frames. Dark, old wax combs raises the disease load unnecessarily. New frames are a worthwhile investment that pays off in improved winter survival rates.
