Step-by-Step Process for Requeening a Beehive - Essential Beekeeping Skills
Guide to Successfully Requeening a Beehive - Bee Colony Management
1. FIND QUEEN

Day 0: This is generally the hardest part of requeening a beehive you MUST find the queen. If you do not find the queen and you go and ahead and introduce a mated queen, the original queen will just kill her.

If you cant find her, take a look at this video to help track her down - FIND A QUEEN.

2. KILL QUEEN

Day 0: It's never nice to kill a living creature but in order to successfully requeen a beehive, you must first dispatch the original queen.

Once you have found the queen, pick her up and squish her between your fingers. This is the most humane method to kill a queen as it's as quick as it can possibly be.

3. REMOVE CELLS

Day 0: Once the queen has been killed, close the hive back and leave the bees alone for 8 days.

Day 8: After 8 days, go through every single frame and shake the bees off. Identify all emergency cells and remove then. Double check - you need to remove ALL the cells.

4. ADD CAGED QUEEN

Day 8: Immediately after destroying ALL the emergency cells, the colony is now hopelessly queenless. They have no queen and no resources (eggs or larvae) to create one.

Add a mated queen, in a sealed queen cage and place between two frames of brood. Do not remove the tab covering the fondant.

5. REMOVE FONDANT TABS

Day 10: Leave the sealed cage in between the brood frames for 24 hrs. This allows the bees to get used to the smell of their new queen.

After 24 hrs, you can remove the plastic tabs with a flat head screwdriver to expose the fondant. Place the cage back between the frames of brood and the bees will slowly release the queen. See different cage design below!

6. CHECK FOR EGGS

Day 17: After 1 week, we go back and check for eggs to see if the queen has been successfully introduced. If you see eggs, then there is no need to see the queen.

If you dont see eggs, try and locate the queen. It can take 2-3 weeks for mated queens to come back into lay following being caged.

7. JZBZ CAGES

If your queen arrives in a JZBZ cage like this, it is ALREADY primed for introduction and you can place directly into a hopelessly queenless hive.

There are no tabs to pop and the bees will eat the brown fondant and release the queen.

8. SLOW IT DOWN

Should you wish to slow down the introduction, you can cover the tube with foil or plastic tape. This will stop the bees being able to release the queen.

Perfect for if you haven't reached that queenless status yet and you want to bank the queen.

9. 'POP THE TAB'

Finally, once you are ready to 'pop the tab' and let the bees start to eat through the fondant. You can safely remove the foil cover and the bees will recommence releasing the queen.

These cages are impregnated with queen pheromone which can help with acceptance.

Is there a queen in my beehive (4).jpg
What a queen! Just went straight into the job. Two weeks in hive, eggs and larvae everywhere. Beautiful, full frame laying pattern. Bees are very calm and relaxed doing their job. I’m your customer forever. Excellent service, timely delivery. Everything as planned. Thank you very much BMH.

How to requeen a colony of bees in your beehive

The video below shows you how to make splits in the same apiary but the process is exactly the same for requeening a beehive. Instead of removing frames of bees from a donor colony, you just have to find and kill the queen and then complete all of the steps on the original donor hive. Good luck!

How To Make Natural Beeswax Firelighters From Old Brood Frames
How To Make Natural Beeswax Firelighters From Old Brood Frames

Old brood frames and scrap beeswax can look like a horrible mess, but there is still a lot of value left in them. Once I have rendered out as much wax as I sensibly can, there is often a pile of darker, lower grade wax that I would never use for candles or cosmetics. Instead of throwing it away, I turn it into simple, natural firelighters. In this guide I will walk you through how I make beeswax firelighters using wood wool and recovered wax from old brood frames. This is not about fancy...

How To Render Beeswax Cappings Into Beeswax Blocks
How To Render Beeswax Cappings Into Beeswax Blocks

Beeswax cappings are one of the nicest by products of extracting honey. They look and smell fantastic, they are usually much cleaner than old brood comb, and they give you some of the highest quality wax you will ever get from your bees. A lot of beekeepers scrape them off, let them pile up in a tub and never quite get around to dealing with them. That is a shame, because with a simple process you can turn those sticky cappings into clean wax blocks ready for candles, polishes or swapping in...

How I Time My Varroa Treatment Around A Cold Snap To Kill More Mites
How I Time My Varroa Treatment Around A Cold Snap To Kill More Mites

Varroa is still the number one health threat to honey bees in the UK. You feel it in spring when colonies that looked fine in autumn come out weak, slow and virus ridden. One of the biggest improvements I have made in my own beekeeping is learning to time winter oxalic acid treatments around a natural brood break, instead of just picking a random date on the calendar. In this guide I will show you how I use the first proper cold snap as a trigger, apply a simple three week rule and then treat...
